The Boathouse at the Bay of Islands
Nineke Metz - 12/02/03
After two years of careful planning and construction, The
Boathouse in the Bay of Islands has opened its doors to guests.
The Boathouse is located over the water in Opua between the car
ferry and the beach. It consists of two fully self-contained luxury
apartments with a nautical theme. On XtraMSN travel page The
Boathouse gets described as: "The building is shaped like a boat,
suspended over the water like a boat, and indeed, has both a landing (the
bottom apartment) and a bridge above. The Boathouse combines all
this seafaring style with facilities and an ambience that couldn't be
surpassed by even the highest class city hotel".

Property Manager Tania Townsend is very excited about The
Boathouse: "As soon as the new brochure was at the Information Centres
the phone started ringing. People are also finding information on the
internet. The guests that stay at The Boathouse really love it".
Ms Townsend expects a lot of interest from international visitors to New
Zealand. One UK Tour Operator has already included The Boathouse
in its brochure. Turquoise Holidays, who bring out a special brochure with
beach houses and villas, were recently in New Zealand looking for new
properties and were very quick to secure The Boathouse for their
English clients. The Auckland market is also interested. Both the corporate
and romantic get-awayers are being targeted to come and stay at The
Boathouse.

A room with a view

Local craftsman and builder Grant McInnes used a lot of innovative
techniques to pleasantly surprise guests. As you walk into the foyer, the
porthole in the tiled floor is the first eye catcher. Another nice touch is
the floating floor in the kitchen, which is softer to stand on compared to
traditional wooden floors. The lounge offers comfortable suede lounge
suites and a complete home entertainment system.

The bathrooms have under floor heating, custom made vanities and a bidet.
The balconies are shaped like the bow of a ship with railings of curved
glass topped with stainless steel. And because of its location, there are
views from every room.
